Methodology directory-coverage-v1

How we count directory coverage

MyKavaBar public directory coverage in the 50 U.S. states and District of Columbia. Includes coming-soon listings separately. This is not a census of operating businesses.

Source and eligibility

The canonical source is the MyKavaBar public bar feed, also used for the website's directory index. Every page of a response is collected and checked against pagination totals and unique numeric directory IDs before a capture is accepted. Capped state or city listing responses are not used to count the national directory.

The default directory excludes inactive and hidden records and applies named-brand filters for Kavasutra, RonKava, and KavaRon. The public feed does not report how many records those filters omit. A verified flag has no dated venue-check evidence. Directory additions and removals do not establish business openings or closures.

Geography covers 50 states and DC. State codes are normalized; explicit foreign countries and non-U.S. records are excluded. Canonical city aliases, including Port Saint Lucie → Port St. Lucie in Florida, use existing directory rules. A listing without a usable city remains in its state and national total and is reported as unassigned.

Unit, status, and duplicate candidates

One stable directory ID is one listing. A chain can have several locations. Shared addresses are candidates for manual review, not automatic duplicates. We do not merge or remove rows just to change a statistic.

These three groups sum to the directory total. An app active flag means directory eligibility, not a verified operating status.

Dates and freshness

The live tracker attempts refresh every ten minutes when requested. A failed refresh retains the last complete capture and labels it stale. With no valid capture, the tracker returns an unavailable response instead of zero. Capture times are not used as sitemap modification dates for individual venues.

Snapshots and changes

Monthly releases are actual dated captures with a method version, source revision, source hash, and public-field exports. A capture early in the month is not a month-end estimate. Originals cannot be overwritten by the capture tool. Source files contain only approved public listing fields; account, subscription, billing, owner, user, and chat fields are excluded.

Differences between captures describe additions, removals, or reclassifications in directory coverage. They do not establish business openings, closures, or industry growth. No historical trend is backfilled from record creation dates. Corrections require a separately identified reviewed release that preserves the original.

Corrections, reuse, and citation

Send a correction with the venue URL, proposed change, and public supporting evidence. Operators and other public sources can help verify a venue; populated fields alone are not proof of accuracy.

Downloads are available for inspection and citation under the site's existing terms. No new open-data license is granted here. Cite MyKavaBar, the snapshot URL, exact capture timestamp, count definition, and method version. Choose a frozen capture for historical citations.
